Container Shipping a Vehicle from Australia
Container Shipping a Vehicle from Australia
Shipping a Vehicle out of Australia is relatively easy, firstly there is no language barrier and secondly the system is well organised.
Since 911 the security systems and the work place health and safety procedures have however made it more difficult (=more expensive) to personally load/unload your own vehicle.
We chose and have continued to choose Colless Young Pty Ltd, 3/7 Miller Street Murarrie Brisbane 4172.

Our most helpful contact is Allan Colless. E-mail allan@collessyoung.com.au
Allan can quote on Containers, Flat-Rack and Ro-Ro to almost anywhere. He will also research the best rate from a number of shipping companies.
Container shipment from Brisbane to Durban, Sth Africa - 2016:
Preparing the vehicle for shipping:
The main fuel tank if Diesel should be below 1/4 full, and I believe if Petrol should be empty.
The vehicle should be electrically isolated. Either physically remove and tie back all cables from both the start and house batteries or fit isolators that can be turned OFF.
All combustibles should be removed eg Petrol, Metho/denatured alcohol, LPG etc.
To avoid your shipment being classed as ‘Hazardous’ you should also remove the fire extinguisher, pressure packs ( WD40 etc) plus any Li-Ion Batteries.
These are the rule outlines however we have never been asked to comply with any of the above, other than in Russia where we had to provide a stat declaration stating the diesel fuel was less than 1/4 full. None the less we do adhere to the sensible components of the above.
Loading:
As per our request to load the containers ourselves, Allan organised pick up of the container, pad hire, and delivery of the loaded containers back to the wharf. Should you have your own ‘space’ to swing lift the containers onto and the next day pick up, this is also possible, however remember that the further the distance from the port the more expensive is the transport. Colless Young can also arrange loading/unloading if needed.
Colless Young arranged for us to self load at:
Dionysius Transport
246 Lytton Road Morningside 4170
We ratchet strap our vehicle down in a cross manor using 2000+ Kg rated straps. Ensure the metal ratchet is returned to its locked position.
Check the container before loading that the side tie down points are not broken and that you have attachments that will fit onto your vehicles frame and the container tie downs.
Paperwork:
Once the ship has sailed you will then receive your BILL OF LADING. These are the shipping documents showing the ship and your cargo details. It will also have the agent contact details at the receiving port. If you do not have a preferred agent in the foreign port Colless Young can arrange with one of their contacts to process the clearance the other end.
If your vehicles is being shipped under a Carnet de Passage either Colless Young can process this or you can take this along with your Bill of Lading for signing off to AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION Offices at 20 - 22 The Circuit Brisbane Airport BRISBANE QLD 4007 Telephone: 1300 558 287.
Bill of Lading must be E-mailed to your Import Customs agent overseas and as for the Carnet either send by secure means or hand carry it with you.
