Honduras Part 2 - Waterfalls & Mountains

Sunday, 28 October 2012

Friday 26th October:

Today a driving day.

Road conditions varied from two lane great roads, to old broken and deep pot holed black top that occasionally just stops and becomes a back country dirt road. These are still pot holed !.

Honduras lacks the photographic indigenous dress of Guatemala.

Everyone is in jeans. Although friendly it is also more difficult is extract a smile and wave.

Now in the northern part at Lake Yojoa.

Saturday 27th October:

A slow start today, with a short drive to the Pulhapanzak falls.

Very commercial with 5 tour buses with tourists from the cruise ships.

We then decided to drop into a small micro brewery and finished staying not only the afternoon but also the night !

The beer was not a bad drop but being a rum drinker I stayed with  Bobbie’s rum mixture.

Sunday 28th October:

Back onto Highway CA5, a really good road that was built by US aid to Honduras.

On the road side, fresh fruit stalls, and local honey....and the honey is very good.(L60/750mls - US/A$3)

Also a large assortment of brightly coloured pottery.

In the town of Comayagua and and old church built around 1685 and supposably  the oldest clock in the Americas. (?)

A wide berth around the maze of streets in the capital of Tegucigalpa and up into the mountains to the Parque National La Tigra.

Through the small village of San Juancito and onto a small single lane track that went up and up.

There were a number of switchbacks some requiring a couple of re-directions to get round.

It is quite cool up here

La Tigra Park Camp @1722metres

Monday 29th October:

The day starts with a brisk walk up to the old silver-lead-zinc mine site and some waterfalls.

This area was the centre of some intense mining some 70 years ago before the government stepped in and set aside the mountains as Honduras’s first National Park

Thick rainforest and most the trees are covered with bromeliads and orchids.

Back down the steep track in 2nd low, and a re-fight of those switchbacks again

Following CA6 towards the Nicaraguan border we spend out last local Lempira currency on supplies and fuel in Danli

Arriving at the border a little later than hoping we start our process at 3.30pm finishing in the dark at 6pm.

Complicated but with a successful outcome we camp at the first service station about 22kms south of the border.

All will be set out later in the Overland DIY section.
