3. Ussher Point
3. Ussher Point
Monday, 4 July 2011
With time now on our hands we explore some areas we have previously visited south and north of the beautiful Ussher Point. Firstly south them by foot north.
This old 4x4 has been stuck in Orford Bay for many years, simply he did not read the conditions
Walking the cliff faces a falling rock strikes Rob on the head. And a small bow tie is appropriate for his white shirt.
Within only 20 metres, 73 single thongs.
An old Pacific Dug Out Canoe
Long line fishing floats
Miles of nylon rope
Dinner plate sized oysters
On a found plastic kayak some beach surfing
An emergency inflatable boat.
Walking north of Ussher Point strangely eroded ironstone formations.
More long line fishing net beacons.
Finally found, something we have been looking for for many years. The remains of another WWII Bell P-38 Airacobra ( Sometimes spelt Aero Cobra) that crashed on the 26th April 1942 north of Ussher Point.
It landed on the beach in the photograph below at the far right hand end.
Eleven of the new aircrafts crashed in this area after running out of fuel on a delivery flight from Cairns to New Guinea.
Position is S11* 7.185 E142* 47.323

And this is what they look like....
Back at Ussher Point, Ironstone above Bauxite makes a colourful contrast to the tropical green.
